CAMPUS WELFARE DIALOGUE: OUTCOMES & NEXT STEPS

Campus welfare dialogue session with student and faculty representatives

Why we convened

In August 2025, Learn N' Lunch hosted a Campus Welfare Dialogue bringing together student guild representatives, faculty welfare contacts, and program volunteers from four universities. The goal was not another abstract discussion about "student challenges" — it was a working session to agree on specific, testable improvements to meal access and welfare communication.

Participants

  • 22 student leaders (guild, faculty reps, ambassadors)
  • 8 faculty / welfare office contacts
  • 11 Learn N' Lunch staff and volunteers
  • 2 community nutrition advisors

Agreed outcomes

1. Publish a shared "where/when" schedule

Students repeatedly said confusion about distribution timing was the biggest barrier — not lack of interest. Campuses will pilot a standardized weekly schedule posted in three places: guild notice boards, a pinned WhatsApp message, and the Learn N' Lunch Stories page.

2. Create a student feedback channel

Each campus will maintain a simple Google Form linked from event signage. Responses reviewed weekly by ambassadors and shared monthly in a public summary (no personal identifiers published).

3. Improve volunteer handoffs

Campuses agreed to document volunteer roles using a one-page playbook so new volunteers can join mid-semester without losing quality.

Discussion notes and action items from the dialogue

Student priorities (ranked)

From a live polling exercise at the dialogue:

  1. Predictable meal windows aligned to lecture breaks
  2. Exam-period support when skipping meals is most common
  3. Dignity-centered service — no public labeling of students who receive meals
  4. Transparent reporting on how many meals are served and where funding goes

"We do not need perfection. We need consistency students can plan around."
— Student guild representative, Makerere
