Food insecurity is not only about whether food exists. It is also about who can access it, who is affected most, and what barriers shape people’s ability to meet their nutritional needs.
In universities, students experience food insecurity differently. Factors such as economic background, social expectations, and access to opportunities can influence how students navigate food challenges. Gender is an important part of understanding these differences.
A gender lens helps us recognise that food insecurity is connected to wider inequalities in access to resources, opportunities, and decision-making.
Globally, women and girls often face structural barriers that affect their access to food and nutrition. Within higher education spaces, understanding these realities is essential to developing solutions that support all students effectively.
Food security interventions must therefore move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and consider the diverse experiences of students.
Nutrition plays an important role in students’ ability to participate, learn, and succeed.
When students experience food insecurity, it can create additional barriers to academic engagement and wellbeing. Addressing campus hunger is therefore not only a welfare issue; it is an investment in creating equitable learning environments.
Universities must recognise that supporting student success includes ensuring students have access to affordable, nutritious food.
Ending campus hunger requires research, collaboration, and solutions designed around real student needs.
This means:
Understanding how different students experience food insecurity, Creating inclusive nutrition and food access programmes, Strengthening partnerships that improve campus food systems, and Integrating food security into student support strategies
At Learn And Lunch, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to pursue education without food insecurity becoming a barrier.
Through research, advocacy, nutrition education, and partnerships, we are working to advance food-secure universities in Uganda.
